About Us

The Laurel Elementary School was a K-5 public school that closed in 2015 due to low enrollment and failed/polluting sewage treatment plant. After sitting empty for several years, community members rallied to breath life back into the campus and began to restore the hole that was left in the community after the closing of a school that educated brought together our youth for decades.

The Laurel Community Center was formed as a non-profit Organization in 2017. In early 2019, the Organization received the deed to the 6-acre creek front property. The covid pandemic allowed time for the board and volunteers to work on renovating, equipping, and repairing the former school and repurposing it into the lively campus it is growing to be.

Since the beginning, the Organization has been run by a volunteer board of directors who have and continue to working hard to recreate a community space for all to gather in the rural Laurels of Northern Madison County. In 2021 the Board of Directors hired an Administrator to join the team to help with the day to day tasks of the growing Organization. Today the Organization is growing, thriving, and striving to serve all members of the community with as many resources that we can bring to the Laurel area.

Please come get involved in the Laurel Community Center! We have weekly and monthly programs and events. We have numerous volunteer opportunities. And are continuing work hard to bring as many resources to our campus!
